How to Handle Different Emergency Plumbing Repairs?

In this article, I am going to talk about plumbing emergencies experienced by many homeowners. Ensure that you perform the repairs below before contacting an emergency plumbing company. However, if the repairs don’t solve the plumbing problem or if you are unsure of your ability to apply do it you repairs, just call your local emergency plumbers and have the problem fixed once and for all.

Leaky Faucets

Emergency plumbers in Chobham reported that a leaky kitchen or leaky bathroom faucet is the most common emergency plumbing problem. Those who want to fix the problem should know the different types of faucets.

You need to know that:

  • A cartridge or ball faucet has one lever for hot and cold water.
  • A compression faucet valve usually has two levers that will rise up when they are turned on.
  • A reversed compression faucet valve has handlers that lower when water is turned on.
  • If you want to repair a leaking ball faucet or cartridge, turn the water supply off and remove the faucet handle using an Allen wrench.

Blocked Kitchen Drain

The function of a kitchen drain is to get rid of dirty water from the dishwasher and kitchen sinks and food scraps from your garbage disposal. The pipe can be clogged by things that are larger than food particles. So how can you repair a blocked kitchen drain? Here is a step-by-step guide:

  • Remove the strainer and put a plunger over your drain’s hole
  • Fill the sink with water just enough to cover the plunger’s cup
  • Push down on the plunger’s cup forcefully and then pull back up to develop suction in the sink to loosen the clog
  • Do this until the obstruction is lifted and water quickly drains from the sink
  • If the plunger does not work, then it may be a good idea to use a kitchen’s plumber snake

However, if the sink does not drain even after using a plumber’s snake and plunger, then it is important to know that the clog is lodged deep in your drain line. If this is the case, call a plumber as soon as possible. This will help you ensure that the problem is dealt with before sewer backs up on the kitchen floor.

Clogged Toilet

This problem needs urgent emergency plumbing repair. It is wise to avoid flushing objects not meant for a certain drain as this can clog a toilet. However, if your toilet is clogged do the following:

  • If your bowl if full, empty half of its contents using a handled container. However, if it is empty, add water until it becomes full.
  • Put a toilet plunger over the drain and then move it upwards and downwards. Do this repeatedly until water drains out of your toilet bowl.
  • If your plunger is still ineffective after doing all these, try using a plumbing auger. Push the auger down the drain until it hits the obstacle.
  • Rotate the auger to break up the blockage.
  • If the auger is ineffective, it means that the clog may be deeper. If this is the case, call an emergency plumber to fix this problem.

TIP: Using a kitchen plunger to unclog your kitchen sink and using a toilet plunger to unclog your toilet will help you avoid potential health hazards. A kitchen plunger is like a ball cut in half while a toilet plunger is like a distorted ball that has a large hole at the bottom.

No Hot Water

A storage tank water heater usually takes fresh water from a water supply line and then heats it up using electricity or gas. The tank will keep the water at a set temperature until a hot water is turned on.

A storage tank water heater usually takes fresh water from a water supply line and then heats it up using electricity or gas. The tank will keep the water at a set temperature until a hot water is turned on.

However, if there is no hot water coming through after turning on the hot water tap, then your water heaters may be causing the problem. Faulty relief valves and thermostat allow internal heat and pressure to rise and explode. This is why it is important to be very cautious when examining and working on faulty water heaters as shown below:

  • Check other faucets for hot water to find out if the water heater or faucet is the source of the problem. If the problem stems from the faucet, check if there is a broken pipe.
  • Touch the water heater. If it feels hot, then it means that the unit functions properly.
  • Check gas water heater for lit pilot lights.
  • Check the fuse or circuit breaker of the electrical water heaters. If the breaker is tripped or your fuse if blown, reset the circuit breaker box or replace the fuse depending on where the problem is.
